Gusty Gibbon Is My Friend

no comments

I recently remembered why I hate XP. Over the fall I have watched my once mighty pc come to a screeching halt. Even after numerous defrags and purging of the prefetch and temp directory programs took longer to open, playing graphically intense video games became painfully sluggish. So I decided to find an alternative for my x86 box.

So… Over the weekend I installed Ubuntu’s latest release (7.10 Gusty Gibbon).
It rocks. It’s faster, it’s pretty, easy to install and more intuitive than XP. I installed vmware and a fully loaded image of XP for work from home tasks.

I may put aside space for a real Windows partition in case I get the gaming itch again. I blew too many hours playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion this fall. It’s good thing Linux and top shelf games don’t mix.
Hmm, maybe it’s time to install a copy of DOSBox?

I also got my hands on a copy of OS X Leopard. Even thought I haven’t spent a whole heck of time using it, I am impressed with the little upgrades and revisions from Tiger. I had heard about upgrade issues, so did clean installs on two of the macs in my apartment to avoid any problems. The build it VNC Viewer and multiple desktop feature are quite nice.
